6 Design Tips for Bath Tile
The versatility and durability of tile make it a great material for
all sorts of bathroom applications. Of course, tile also works brilliantly
in lots of other areas too. We would like to share these six guidelines
when you consider tile in a bathroom remodeling project or a new home.
- Don't assume that a small bath needs small tiles. "Larger
tiles create fewer grout lines and can help open up a space" advises
Kimberly Mento, a senior interior design specialist for
American Olean. Set floor tiles on the diagonal for an even more
expansive feel.
- "Choose a limestone-look floor tile or one with a little patter
or flecks in it for a children's bath, so you won't have to be
a slave to constant cleaning," recommends designer Beverly
Ellsley.
- "You can't go wrong with white," asserts Barbara Sallick,
owner of Waterworks. "It never goes out of style." Add
depth and interest to clean-slate white with carved design, a
clear crackle glaze over bisque tile or white-on-white embossed
inserts.
- "Try a beautiful trim around a shower door," Sallick says. "It
makes a big difference in how finished and elegant a space
looks."
- "Don't ignore the shower floor," Barbara Sallick continues. "It's
a wonderful opportunity to do a great mosaic, or bring
in a design from the rest of the bath. This is a contained space
where you can really have some fun - think of it as your personal
spot."
- Combine tile and stone in an interesting way. "Make a raised
panel on a shower wall with stone molding, or use a stone
baseboard with a tile wall," suggests Sallick. "Carved
stone baseboards have a lot of design impact for not too
much money, since you're working with a small space."
